An independent Alberta?
Author and researcher James Roguski interviews law professor Bruce Pardy on the fraught path ahead for Alberta in its pursuit of independence, which Roguski likens to a “Gordian Knot” of complicated issues. While advocates argue that Alberta could become the least governed, least regulated, and lowest taxed nation in the world, boasting the highest average real GDP per capita—this bold vision is still not enough, asserts Roguski. Bruce concurs. Bruce contends that the push for independence shouldn’t just be about money, even though Alberta is Canada’s wealthiest province per capita. He argues that true independence should focus on creating a radically different society, free from the bureaucratic shackles of the Canadian government. The goal? A fresh start with a new constitution that prioritizes individual freedoms and equality under the law, rather than remain bogged down by the existing system.
